It's true the film could have been a lot funnier - but thank goodness we have Bringing Up Baby for that!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16581509646636552299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2825694783801781047.post-3109423268153136722012-06-21T13:56:05.759-07:002012-06-21T13:56:05.759-07:00Nice, Margaret! I didn't know that Kate paid from her own pocket and lost her money.
I love Sylvia Scarlett, it's ahead of its time, but as a comedie it still lacks the fun of future screwballs Kate and Cary did together. I thought it have some drama moments and also when she reveals she is a woman nobody seens to be mad.
Greetings and welcome to the world of blogathons,
LeLêhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02419693749682458647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2825694783801781047.post-17296864751754544952012-06-20T09:22:43.599-07:002012-06-20T09:22:43.599-07:00I think if it had been made pre-code they would ha...I think if it had been made pre-code they would have been a lot more ambitious and taken more risks. The major failure of this film was that they tried to play it safe.

Did you know Hepburn herself cut her hair and dressed as a boy when she was a kid? She definitely associated closely with tomboyishness from a very young age.

I'm glad you enjoyed my post! One wonders what this would've been like if it had been made pre-Code.

Interesting that Kate put up some of her own dough into making this. Sounds like this was a film she was really eager to make - and why not? It's the kind of showcase role actors dream of.

Good job. However, you can enjoy it if you just think of it in terms of another opportunity to hang out with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. And her performance reminds me of Jo in LITTLE WOMEN (1933). I'm glad you liked my post! I had been wanting to see Sylvia Scarlett for years but was very disappointed once I did; to me the pacing is just off and it really doesn't feel at all like a Cukor/Hepburn/Grant collaboration should. I do think it has some interesting things to say about gender, and particularly sexuality when it comes to the relationship between Grant and Hepburn's characters. Your review has convinced me to give it a second look. Thanks very much for contributing to the blogathon!Carolinehttp://garbolaughs.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
